This year we are featuring our Agricultural Heritage and Agribusiness just east of Bowmanville on June 8th from 10 am to 4 pm at 14 interesting sites. The tour includes 4 historic private homes along the driving route that allows visitors to discover a world of history alongside the latest technology at 11 agricultural operations. Guests can learn about apple orchards, apple processing for juice and apple packaging for sale across Canada; learn what it takes to run a dairy farm; and experience the differences in greenhouse operations at the three included on the tour. At one guests will see the latest in irrigation and environmental management practices for growing garden plants; at another visitors will find out what hydroponic growing is and have a chance to see the tomatoes and cucumbers growing without soil; while at a third operation under cover, guests will take in the beauty and complexity of growing roses. Visitors will appreciate how farming has changed by visiting a seed cleaning plant in operation since the 1930s and then learning about seed management and cropping at a state of the art operation near by. Guests will also discover what it takes to grow commercial sod and then transition to another highly regulated kind of farming to learn about what it takes to grow organic! At some sites there will be local farm gate market vendors and food demos at one other site. Lunch for purchase will be possible at 3 sites along the tour route.
