A NOTE FROM “SHOWSCHOOL

13450758_621814817969986_7350544636488719406_n-1

How  Do We Teach The All Important Quality Of Persistence

1) By using specific goals with an exciting deadline

When rehearsals or classes are designed to not only build a skill, but to show it off at a public show just weeks away, students are much more motivated to focus, fully participate, and apply themselves because there are real stakes involved.
When students are able to show the fruits of their labour, they benefit from an emotional payoff, which feeds the habit of persistence. The source was not from parents lecturing them on the importance of practice, but from their own life experience!
Because ShowSchool gives students the chance to perform publicly, they grow and mature through valuable life experience on stage and off.

2) A Program Structured for Success

After many years of teaching students of all experience levels, I know now that everyone needs to feel a sense of accomplishment, not just every 6 weeks at a show, but at each rehearsal.
We do this partly by planning “wins” so to speak, throughout the program. By carefully gauging a student’s current ability and level of confidence, we then gently lead them to go beyond their comfort zone, just enough to ensure that they can succeed, and praise them so that they recognize achievement.

Specifically we do this by:
Breaking up into smaller groups or even working alone with a student before or after class. The more lacking in confidence, the smaller the group.
Designing material that can be performed at almost any level of experience. More advanced material can be taught once a student’s confidence and skill(s) grow.
Showcase student strength(s) by featuring their current abilities in a show until they are ready to learn new skills.

3) Modelling persistence by example & storytelling

Years ago, while still in Theatre school, I performed on Toronto’s Breakfast Television. The show was shot live, so I only had one chance to get it right. It was very early in the morning, and I was exhausted. Although I knew the material and rehearsed it more times than I could count, when the cameras & lights turned on, I completely forgot everything! I panicked and froze, but only for a moment. I then did the only thing I could do – improvise. I made up the choreography on the spot and acted like this was exactly how it was supposed to be. No one else noticed but my teacher.
Improvisation takes confidence. This level of confidence and grit was cultivated within me by a loving mentor. My aim is to provide that same gift to students now. I accomplish this through telling stories like this one, and by being there to nurture their own persistence when challenges happen.

Bio – As the founder of ShowSchool, Mr. Broda has taught almost a thousand students from around the world and performed in more than 2500 educational shows in nineteen different countries over a ten year period.
Jayce is also a current host/producer of a Android Authority that educates and entertains more than 20 million viewers per month and recently reached 2.3 million subscribers.

ShowSchool’s first class is free.

Rehearsals begin Sept 26th.

There are only 20 spots available in the cast.

Hello Everyone!
I hope you had a wonderful labour day weekend. We went on a 24 hour adventure and I thought I would share it.
My husband and I decided it would be fun to do a road trip with our two kids over the labour day weekend. I booked a night at a place called Hope Lake Lodge just past the Finger Lakes Region in New York. It was a five hour drive from Toronto. The place looked like a Great Wolf Lodge nestled in the mountains of Collingwood. The hotel was nice and food was good, but the Water Park was really lousy. It was 1/4 the size of Great Wolf and it felt gross and beaten up. The arcade also couldn’t hold a candle to Great Wolf, but it was okay. What we did all love was the Mountain Coaster! It is exactly like the one in Blue Mountain where you sit on the little cars and you control the speed. I wouldn’t go back to this resort but we had a nice adventure.

The next morning we drove two hours to The Strong Children’s Museum in Rochester NY. It was fantastic!!! There is something there for kids of all ages. I was in love with the upstairs with the toys and games. It was so interactive. My kids had a blast and we spent 5 hours there. The Strong Museum is a 3 hour drive from Toronto. If you want more information on it, go to: http://www.museumofplay.org. I highly recommend this place. It is DEFINITELY worth the drive! We have nothing like this at home!

thumbnail_img_1213

After the Museum, we called around to book a hotel room for the second night. There were limited hotels available and the prices were jacked up so high, that we decided to drive home after dinner. I definitely recommend pre-booking a room in Rochester or Buffalo (in advance) if you plan to stay over.

After the Museum, we went to the Cheesecake Factory in Rochester and the kids loved it.
It was definitely a nice way to end the Summer!

I hope all of your Kid’s had a nice first week of School! I feel relief that my kid’s minds are now being stimulated during the day, but I secretly miss them when they are gone!
