EASTER & PASSOVER WEEK 2015

EASTER & PASSOVER WEEKEND

We have a big weekend coming up. This year, PASSOVER AND EASTER Fall on the same weekend! How fun is that? The only downfall, is that I now get the luxury of having my son home for a full week. I had my daughter home for March Break and now I have to keep my son busy. It is so much easier entertaining them together than alone!
In the light of Passover, I thought I would post my favourite Passover treat, if anyone wants to try to make it.  It is called Matzah Crunch and it is beyond addicting! Picture a Skor Bar on Crack! That is this dessert. It is VERY easy to make. If I can do it, anyone can! You can store it in the freezer but it won’t last there long.
http://www.bonniestern.com/bonnies-recipes/recipe/caramel-matzo-crunch/

I think it is safe to say that whether you celebrate Easter or Passover, you are going to be eating a lot this weekend and your children will most likely be on Sugar Highs!
I wish everyone a Happy Holidays and a weekend full of love, family, and happiness!

Turkey Chili With Sundried Tomatoes Recipe On A Dime

Nutritionist Melissa Jacks has provided us with a delicious Turkey Chili With Sundried Tomatoes Recipe that is healthy and feeds the whole family and on a low budget. I have personally eaten this one and it is really good. Chili lovers will definitely enjoy it. I personally find it filling, but for those whole like variety on the table, you can always add a little salad.

We are all aware of how challenging meal time can be when we are pressed for time. This recipe can be made in advance and frozen for a great meal when you don’t have time to prepare, or simply want a night off!

The trick with making meals that use expensive ingredients such as chili (ground lean meat, peppers, broth, etc.), is to do the following:

1. Ground Meat:

15179617_BG1

Buy your ground chicken/turkey when it goes on sale and freeze it until you are ready to make it. There are some butchers that will even take chicken breasts for you and grind them at the meat counter. This is also a great idea to make sure you get the leanest chicken breasts. Alternatively, you can just look at the weekly flyers (or flipp app) and get it on sale. For those of you who shop at nortown, they actually have great ground chicken and turkey and it is even less expensive than Costco. Last time I bought from them it was only $3.99/lb . Then double or even triple the recipe.

2. Broth:

For those of you who love to cook and make your own broth, obviously this is the least expensive way. I do not make my own broth, so I am always stocking up on organic chicken broth or vegetable broth when they go on sale. At Walmart you can get broth for $1.67/tetra box. Sometimes they are on sale for 2 for $3. Once again, stock up on boxes when they go on sale.

3. Vegetables:

Fresh or frozen? I LOVE buying frozen diced vegetables for my chili, especially onions. Peppers are expensive most of the time when buying fresh, so you can buy your favorite diced vegetable blends at the grocery store and use those. You do not need to stick to the exact vegetables in the recipe. Simply add up how many cups of vegetables are used all together and substitute for those. For example, if mushrooms are expensive and you want to use zucchini instead, just replace the same amount for zucchini. Be creative!

4. Tomato sauce:

Similar to broth, you can make your own, or stock up when on sale. Classico sauces are delicious and clean ingredients. Costco also has my favorite marinara for this chili and it is affordable for 2 large bottles. It is called white linen marinara sauce. I believe it is $5/jar (or it was last time I saw it) and it much larger than classico. Be sure to use a sauce that isn’t full of sugar!

The average cost of one Chili recipe is about $15 or less. The recipe makes 4-6 servings. The best part is that it tastes great!

Happy Anniversary To Entertain Kids On A Dime

1746439xf0yo5wqrc1

Today is my ONE YEAR ANNIVERSARY for Entertain Kids On A Dime!

See below my first ever VIDEO BLOG POST :)
PS-I have no idea what my son is saying.

I am so excited that today is the ANNIVERSARY of ENTERTAIN KIDS ON A DIME!

On this date last year, I wrote my first blog post and started my Entertain Kids On A Dime Facebook Group!
I truly believe that when you love something and work hard, that it will all pay off in the end.
Not only have I been able to help others, but I have learned so much from my readers.

I am on my blog and Facebook group every single day. My cell phone comes with me on all vacations, day trips, and when I am sick in bed. I have not missed a weekly calendar post this whole year. Yup! I even sent one from Turks & Caicos.

WHERE I WAS A YEAR AGO
A year ago, I was a stay at home Mother and became very bored as my 2 year old son was becoming more independent.
I had my daughter at school half day, and my son was home with me. Keeping my son busy in the mornings was getting expensive, so I had to find fun things to do at a low cost.
I began to make lists of cheap and free local programs and would share them with my friends. Then one day a light bulb went off. I thought, how cool would it be to start writing a blog about how to entertain your kids without breaking the bank?
I made a list of crafts to do, and began my journey. Now today, I can stay home with my kids but still do something that I love.

MY FAMILY
*THE HUBBY
I give my husband Darren a lot of credit. I always disappear after dinner and pop back and fourth from the computer, just as my kids need to be put to bed. Sometimes he isn’t too happy but I always tell him that night time is prime time!
I have also taken over his office! I use it much more than him now. I am fortunate to be married to him because he believed in my idea and has supported everything I have done thus far. So for that I say thank you!
*MY KIDS
My two children Brooklyn and Bentley have enjoyed all of the “fun” things they get to do because of my blog. When we cook, do crafts, and experiments, they are always happy to participate.
Their favourite thing to do is attend my blog events. They call them “Mommy’s Blog Parties!” and they love coming to help me. My kids have even stood outside their schools handing out flyers with me. They are the reason I write this blog!

MY FIRST YEAR HIGHLIGHTS:

ALL OF THE AWESOME CONTESTS
* LEGOLAND Discovery Centre Tickets
* Whittamores Farm Tickets
* Lovable Labels Gift Cards
* Glama Gals Tween Spa Free Service
* Disney Girls Prize Pack Basket
* Love Lockits Jewelery Give-away
* Sands Alive Play Pack
* Ripley’s Aquarium Tickets
* Disney on Ice Tickets
* Great Wolf Lodge FREE Room

GREAT WOLF LODGE CRAZE
When I called Great Wolf Lodge to get a group rate, they told me in order for the deal to go through, the group would have to buy 10 rooms. I gave it a shot and I couldn’t believe my eyes. In the first night that I posted, all 10 rooms were sold out. The next day I put out 10 more rooms and they were gone. The third day I posted the last set of 10 rooms. With in a few days, they were gone!
I have decided for the good of the group to get monthly Great Wolf Lodge room rates. I choose the cheapest Friday room rate for each month, and our group sells out now 40-50 rooms per month! Crazy stuff!
I got the group a Deerhurst March Break Room Rate and hope to get more hotels on board to do discounts for our readers.

ENTERTAIN KIDS COUPON PAGE
I saw the need for deals, and I started contacting Entertainment Companies. I was so proud to start my coupon page in October 2014.
This May 2015, will mark my third round of Coupons. I am proud that even some of Toronto’s largest Attractions are apart of my page!

EXCLUSIVE EVENTS
Throwing events was always fun for me, but I never really pictured myself doing this until now!
I partnered up with Yogurtys Autumn Hill in Thornhill to do some Adult Events: Valentines Day Ladies Night Out, VarageSale Ladies Night and a Business Networking Event.
I had also hosted two Kids Events at Yogurtys: Breakfast With Elsa and a Family Day Charity Event supporting Sarah’s Drive For Hope.

My biggest achievement was The Holiday Party I threw in December 2014. The event was sold out a month in advance with 600 people.
I worked like a dog but the day turned out perfect!

TO THE BLOG READERS AND FACEBOOK GROUP MEMBERS!
I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for being a part of this amazing group.
This has become a positive community of supportive Parents. We all share the same common goal, which is to spend time with our Kids!

XOXO

Easter Craft & Snack

For someone who doesn’t celebrate Easter, I think I did a pretty good job with getting into the holiday spirit. My kids has a blast too.
Below are two fun Easter Activities to do with your kids.

Easter Bunny Crafts

I literally spent $4 on this activity and it kept my munchkins very busy. If you already have white glue and scissors, then you will be spending less than $5. I did everything to prep the craft and then I let my kids stick on the cotton balls themselves. They really enjoyed it and they thought the bunnies were funny to look at. This is definitely a keepsake craft.

**Easter Bunnies**

*WHAT YOU’LL NEED
• 2 sheets of Bristol board (2 for $1 at Dollarama)
• 1 bag of white cotton balls PER child ($1 each at Dollarama)
• 1 bag of blue cotton balls which is good for 3 kids ($1 each at Dollarama)
• White Glue
• Scissors
• An enlarged print out of your child’s face.

*INSTRUCTIONS
• Print out an enlarged photo of your child’s face.
• Cut your Bristol board in half.
• Cut out your child’s face and glue it to the paper.
• Draw a face, body, and ears around the face.

•Cut out the bunny.
• Take the extra Bristol board and trace your child’s feet. Glue the feet on the body of the bunny.

•Glue around the insides of bunny.
•Stick the white cotton balls throughout (accept for the feet and inside of the ears).
•Cover the feet and inside of the ears with blue cotton balls.

Easter S’mores Snack

Do you need an Easter gift for family and friends? Then why not make them my version of Easter S’mores. Marshmellow Peeps, chocolate mini eggs and graham crackers. Mmmmm!
Our Neighbours got a special treat from us today and the kids were happy to receive it.

**Easter S’mores Snack**

*WHAT YOU’LL NEED (To make three jars that serve two in each)
• 1 Box of Peeps ($1.50 from The Dollarama in the cookie section)
• 3 Medium Sized Glass Mason Jars ($1.50 each)
• 3 bags of Cadburry Mini Eggs (I got them for 99 Cents each at Rexall)
• 12 Graham Cracker cookies, Arrowroot Cookies, or Tea Biscuit Cookies (Check your cupboard first to see what cookies you have)

*INSTRUCTIONS
• Clean out your Mason jar and dry it well.
• Put 4 graham crackers or cookies on the bottom of the jar.
• Pour 3/4 of your mini eggs package into the jar.
• Put in 2 Peeps.
• Put the rest of the mini eggs from the package on top.

Tips:

* You can make a little Easter egg shaped card and punch a whole at the top, put ribbon through it, and tie it around the jar.

* For one big gift, just buy one large Mason jar.

Great Savings On Gourmet Homemade Food

Great Savings On Gourmet Homemade Food

Meatball_Lightbox

For those parents who don’t enjoy cooking, there is hope for you all! I myself, fall into this category. I’ll be trying to prep food while my two small children are tugging on my pants. Clean up for me is the worst part. I always burn the insides of my pots and pans.
Although restaurant food is a great option, it often becomes very pricy and you don’t know what’s really in your food. Sometimes you just want a nice homemade meal.
I have found your new saviour and it’s called Made With Love Catering. This Company has been my new go meal after I tried their meat balls at a party. The company is founded by two Moms with a love for cooking.

THE PRICE IS RIGHT
You can get a homemade meal for a family of four for $28. They offer chicken, beef, fish and vegetarian meals. They use fancy, healthy, ingredients and it tastes great.
You can buy meals in small packs that cost $14. The meal feeds two people which is good because you and your spouse may like something different then your kids.
Their salads cost $12 and they are amazing. It’s good for a side for two people or for one meal. Their soups are also fantastic. For $10, you get a homemade jar of soup that will knock your socks off.

The best part about Made With Love is that they DELIVER your meal right to your door step. If you aren’t home you can arrange for them to leave your meals on your door step. I get excited on Tuesday afternoons when I find a black reusable bag on my door step filled with food. The meals are meant to stay in the refrigerator for Tuesday- Friday but many are freezable if you know you are going to be out one night.

FREE SOUP INCENTIVE
Made With Love Catering has a recycling initiative. If you return 10 empty soup jars, you get one soup free.

Once their business grows larger, they are also planning to donate extra food for children who can’t afford school lunches.

Made With Love offers gift cards. Let’s say you have a friend who has a new baby or is recovering from an operation. You can send them food through Made With Love Catering with a personal message.

They have also recently opened a commercial kitchen in Vaughan so they can have more space and can accommodate more orders.

HERE IS HOW IT WORKS
1) You sign up for their weekly newsletter.
2) Thursdays you will receive an email for with a list of meals that you can have for the following week.
3) Choose as many meals, soups, and salads, as you like.
4) Put your order in by Sunday night. You will receive an email reminder to put in your order.
5) Tuesday your order will be delivered.

A MESSAGE FROM THE OWNERS
I spoke with the two owners and they had this to say:
“Food is the one common love that all people have and it’s the one single thing that unites us all, no matter what the circumstance is.”

“Food is also the one thing that should not be divided by financial status. We are all deserving of home cooked and nutritious meals.”

“Food should not come by struggle! These are the reasons why we came up with this company and named it the name we did. We are 2 moms with a passion for food, eating, cooking, and most of all bringing happiness to others through food.”
